Harambee Stars Stunned by Bright Stars in CHAN 2024 Qualifiers

Kenya’s Harambee Stars faced a challenging start in their quest for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualification, suffering a 2-0 defeat to South Sudan in the first leg. Despite being co-hosts and already qualified for the tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania, the team opted to participate in the qualifiers as per CAF directives to all host nations. However, the lack of preparation showed as Engin Firat’s hastily assembled squad was unable to overcome a determined South Sudan side.

The first half saw Harambee Stars struggle to create clear chances, with their best opportunity coming from Austine Odhiambo’s free kick that struck the crossbar. The Kenyan side shared possession evenly with their hosts, but disaster struck 35 minutes in when captain Musa Mohammed had to be stretchered off due to discomfort, replaced by Brian Eshihanda.

Both teams remained deadlocked at halftime, but the Bright Stars seized control in the second half. South Sudan’s Ezbon Malish of Jamus Fc broke the deadlock before Yohanna Paulino doubled the lead, capitalizing on Kenya’s defensive lapses. The match ultimately ended 2-0, giving South Sudan a clear advantage ahead of the second leg.

Kenya fielded a mix of experience and youth, with players like goalkeeper Bryne Omondi, defenders Sylvester Owino, Ronney Onyango, and midfielder Austine Odhiambo, who all featured in recent AFCON qualifiers . Yet, even with the seasoned presence of  Daniel Sakari and Musa Mohammed, the lack of cohesive training left the Stars exposed and vulnerable.

The return leg, set for next Sunday in Uganda, will be crucial as Kenya looks to salvage pride. The winner of the two-legged tie will move on to face either Rwanda or Djibouti in the final qualification round.
