Gor Mahia’s Secretary General Sam Ochola has appealed to the club’s passionate fanbase to exercise patience as the team works to regain its winning form. Following three consecutive winless matches, including a recent 2-2 draw against Murang’a Seal that saw frustrated fans storm the pitch, Ochola is calling for calm and understanding from supporters.
The record-holding Kenyan Premier League champions started their season with convincing victories over Mathare United (4-0) and Posta Rangers (3-0). However, their recent struggles have sparked discontent among fans who are accustomed to Gor Mahia’s dominance on the pitch. Last weekend, the team saw a 2-0 lead slip away to draw against Murang’a Seal at Machakos Stadium, a result that led to chaos as disappointed fans confronted Brazilian head coach Leonardo Neiva.
Reflecting on the incident, Ochola stressed that fans need to understand the nature of football. “I think Gor Mahia fans should give us time and be patient,” he said in an interview with Citizen Digital. “They are so used to seeing us win that any loss or draw often provokes strong reactions. But in football, there are three outcomes—winning, losing, or drawing—and we must accept them all.”
This recent result follows a narrow 2-1 loss to City Stars, giving Simba Wa Nairobi their first win of the season, and a 0-0 draw with KCB. Ochola noted that the club’s strong winning tradition can sometimes create unrealistic expectations. “Being accustomed to victory has its challenges,” he said. “When we don’t win, fans may feel disappointed, but they must understand that not every match can go our way.”
Gor Mahia, currently nine points behind league leaders KCB, still holds three games in hand and has the opportunity to climb the standings. Fans will be watching closely as the team prepares for their next match against Bandari on Wednesday in Mombasa hoping for a resurgence.
Ochola remains optimistic, urging fans to support the team through its ups and downs. “We need time to perfect our strategy, and we hope the fans will stand by us,” he concluded.
