AFC Leopards and Mathare United have taken disciplinary action against several players for breaching their contracts by participating in unauthorized matches. The suspensions come just days before their respective weekend league fixtures, putting these clubs in a tough spot as they strive to maintain professionalism and discipline.
Mathare United announced that four players—Kevin Kimani, Elli Asieche, Brian Ouru, and Eric Mulu—will serve two-week suspensions without pay for their involvement in an unsanctioned game. The club revealed this decision in an official statement, explaining that the players took part in the match without the club’s approval, an action that directly contravenes several contractual clauses.
What Mathare United Said
“The players’ participation in the external match was deemed a direct violation of several clauses in their contracts,” Mathare United stated. “One of the key clauses emphasizes that players are required to maintain a high standard of physical fitness at all times and not to indulge in any sport, activity, or practice that might endanger their fitness. By participating in an unsanctioned tournament, the four players risked compromising their readiness for official fixtures and violated this standard.”
Mathare United emphasized that the disciplinary measure serves as a reminder to all players of the importance of their contractual obligations. The club further added, “There will be no further communication from the club or any of its members regarding this decision.” This firm stance underscores the club’s commitment to uphold professional standards and sends a message to other players about the consequences of breaching contracts.
AFC Leopards
Meanwhile, AFC Leopards also confirmed that three of its players—Victor Omune, Kennedy Owino, and Julius Masaba—have been suspended for a similar breach of contract. Like their counterparts at Mathare, these players were found to have participated in an unauthorized match in October without informing the club.
Mathare United’s CEO, Jecton Obure, addressed the issue candidly, explaining that making the suspension public was a necessary step. “We had to make the suspension public for them to learn from it and act as a warning to others,” he said. “As a player, when you have a contract, you have to honor it to the latter. The most embarrassing thing is having senior players getting involved in such activities. We almost fired the coach because of poor results, only to find that our players have been featuring in unsanctioned tournaments. This is uncalled for.”
Obure’s comments highlight the impact that such actions can have on a club’s performance and morale. Mathare United and AFC Leopards have sent a clear message that they are committed to enforcing the professional standards laid out in player contracts and expect every player to prioritize club obligations over personal pursuits.
These suspensions signal a shift toward stricter adherence to professional conduct, especially as clubs strive for success in competitive league matches
