Kenya’s aspirations of featuring in the 2025 U17 Africa Cup of Nations took a significant hit following a 1-0 defeat to Tanzania at Nakivubo Hamza Stadium in Kampala, Uganda. The loss leaves Salim Babu’s side in a precarious position ahead of their final Group A clash against Uganda on Saturday, December 21.

Kenya’s Over Aged Players Axed From The Squad

The match was marred by pre-game setbacks, with 10 Kenyan players eliminated from the squad after failing to meet the age limit requirements based on MRI scans. The absence of these key players compounded Kenya’s challenge in the must-win encounter.

Tanzania Strike Early

Kenya entered the match knowing a win would put them in contention for the semi-finals, especially after Tanzania and Uganda shared spoils in a 1-1 draw earlier. However, a 19th-minute goal from Juma Sagwe gave Tanzania the lead and set the tone for the game.

Despite controlling possession and mounting pressure, Kenya struggled to find the back of the net. Tanzania, buoyed by their early advantage, adopted a defensive strategy, successfully thwarting Kenya’s attacks to secure their first victory of the tournament.

Do-or-Die Clash Against Uganda

The result leaves Kenya needing a victory against Uganda to advance to the semi-finals. A draw or loss would see them miss out on a chance to join hosts Morocco, Angola, Egypt, Zambia, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Mali, who have already qualified for the continental showpiece slated for March 30 to April 19, 2025.

Kenya’s Challenge Ahead

Coach Salim Babu and his depleted squad face an uphill task against Uganda, who will also be vying for a spot in the semi-finals. The team will need to regroup quickly, overcome the psychological setback of the Tanzania loss, and find a way to capitalize on their attacking opportunities.

With the tournament’s stakes high, Kenya’s fate now hangs in the balance as they aim to keep their dream alive and earn a place in Morocco for the prestigious U17 Africa Cup of Nations.
