Harambee Starlets began their Pink Ladies Cup campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Chinese Taipei. The lone goal came in the first half as Chinese Taipei capitalized on an opportunity, and despite Kenya’s best efforts, they couldn’t break through the opposition’s solid defense.
Coach Beldine Odemba fielded a mix of experience and youth, handing debuts to Fasila Adhiambo and Wincate Kinyua, while naming Ruth Ingosi as captain. Ingosi marshaled the defense, and Lydia Akoth partnered with Lorna Nyarinda in midfield, creating a solid foundation. However, it was Chinese Taipei who took the lead before halftime.
Starlets’ forward Rabecca Okwaro had a chance to level the score, but her shot was expertly saved by the Taipei goalkeeper. The first half ended 1-0, with Kenya pushing to get back into the game.
Coach Odemba made several changes in the second half, looking for a breakthrough, but the Chinese Taipei defense stood firm. The introduction of fresh legs did little to turn the tide, as the disciplined defense thwarted all of Kenya’s attacking efforts. Despite the loss, Odemba praised her team’s effort and expressed confidence in their ability to bounce back in their remaining group matches.
Kenya will look to regroup ahead of their next fixture against Russia on October 26 at Emirhan Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 7 pm. The Starlets will then face the Philippines on October 30 at 4 pm in their final group stage match.
Odemba’s squad features several U20 players, with the coach emphasizing the importance of giving young players exposure on the international stage. With two more group stage games ahead, Harambee Starlets still have a chance to turn their fortunes around and advance in the Pink Ladies Cup.
