The Kenya U20 men’s football team has been awarded KSh 1.8 million by the Ministry of Sports in recognition of their impressive performance and qualification for the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The gesture was announced by Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who hosted the team for breakfast following their narrow 2-1 defeat to Tanzania in the CECAFA U20 final.
“This financial reward aligns with our broader agenda to recognize and support exemplary performance in sports. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the players, coach, FKF, technical staff, and fans for this outstanding achievement.” said CS Kipchumba Murkomen.
In the final Kenya took the lead courtesy of Afc Leopards winger Hassan Beja earlier in the second half after a 0-0 draw in the first half.Simba’s striker Valentino Mashaka equalized for the hosts before Sheikhan Khamis doubled Tanzania’s lead and won it for the Ngorongoroheroes.The two sides had earlier met in the group stage with Kenya winning 2-1.
Despite the loss in the regional final, Kenya’s qualification for AFCON marks a significant milestone in the team’s journey. Six players in the current squad have progressed through the national U13, U15, and U17 ranks, showcasing the effectiveness of Kenya’s grassroots football development.
While speaking to the players, CS Murkomen emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to supporting national teams. He stated,
“Unlike in the past, national teams are now fully supported financially for international competitions, allowing players to focus entirely on their performance without worrying about logistical concerns.”He further added that preparations for AFCON 2025 would begin immediately, including extended training camps and international friendlies against top-tier teams.

“Looking ahead, the Ministry is aiming not just for AFCON success but also for qualification for the U20 FIFA World Cup.” he added
CSMurkomen also announced that the Ministry is enhancing talent identification through advanced data collection methods, which will help pitch Kenyan players to international academies.
The rollout of 30 sports academies across the country is underway, with plans to establish such facilities in all 290 constituencies to boost future talent development.
