Kenyan goalkeeper Ibrahim Wanzala has been recognized as the best goalkeeper of the just-concluded TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) CECAFA qualifiers. Wanzala, who played a pivotal role in Kenya’s journey to the final featuring all the six matches, delivered several standout performances, making crucial saves throughout the tournament.He kept 4 cleansheets only conceding in 2 matches. His heroics between the posts earned him the prestigious accolade, even though Kenya narrowly missed out on the title after a 2-1 defeat to Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Boys.
In addition to Wanzala’s individual recognition, Kenya also received the Fair Play Award, a testament to the team’s discipline and sportsmanship throughout the competition. Despite falling short in the final, Kenya’s Rising Stars impressed with their commitment to the game and conduct on and off the field, making the Fair Play Award a deserved honor.
Meanwhile, Tanzania’s Sabri Kondo was voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. Kondo, who netted five goals for the Ngorongoro Boys, was instrumental in guiding his team to victory. His dynamic play and ability to influence the game earned him widespread praise.
“I thank all my fellow players for the teamwork that saw us win the Cup. I’m grateful for all the support,” Kondo said after receiving the MVP award.
Uganda Hippos striker John Dembe took home the tournament’s Golden Boot after finishing as the top scorer with six goals. Dembe, who currently plays for BK Hacken in Sweden, capped off his campaign with a brace in Uganda’s 3-1 win over Burundi in the third-place playoff.
“I am very happy that I have emerged as the top scorer in this tournament. As a striker, I am very proud of my achievement,” Dembe said in celebration of his feat.
The tournament concluded in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with the home side emerging as champions, Kenya and Tanzania booked a ticket for the 2025 Africa Cup Of Nations while Uganda secured third place.
