Harambee Starlets U17 Aim for Consolation Win Against Mexico in FIFA U17 World Cup

Kenya’s Harambee Starlets U17 are set to face Mexico in their final group match of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup on Thursday at 2 a.m. Though already eliminated from the tournament after losses to England and Korea DPR, the players remain determined to give their best performance and secure a win before returning home.

Valerie Nekesa, one of the team’s standout players, expressed the team’s resolve to end their campaign on a high note. Reflecting on their previous matches, she acknowledged the tough competition but emphasized that Kenya has the potential to rise to the challenge.

“In our previous matches, the other teams have been tough, and so were we, but not quite at that same level. In our game against Mexico, we’re going to give it our all to secure our first three points, so we don’t return home without a win,” Nekesa said confidently.

Marion Serenge echoed similar sentiments, stressing the importance of making their mark on the global stage despite the challenges faced.

“We are going to give our best; we must win. We’re aiming for three points, we’ll score goals, and make our country proud. It’s been a great journey, though not an easy one,” Serenge said, reflecting on the team’s World Cup experience.

Harambee Starlets U17 captain Elizabeth Ochaka, who has been a pillar of strength for the team, also highlighted the significance of their final match, not only in terms of securing a victory but also for the future opportunities it could bring.

“We are going to give it our best, we’ll give 100%. We know Mexico isn’t an easy opponent because no team that qualifies for the World Cup is easy. Every team has worked hard to be here. This is our debut, and we’re here to prove we belong. I believe that against Mexico, some of us may even get scouted,” said Ochaka, hinting at the broader ambitions of the players beyond the tournament.

Despite their early exit, the Harambee Starlets U17 are determined to finish their tournament on a high note, and a victory against Mexico would offer a sweet consolation to cap off what has been a historic journey for the young Kenyan side.
